Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton

The Caribbean, 1665. A remote colony of the English Crown, the island of Jamaica holds out against the vast supremacy of the Spanish empire. Port Royal, its capital, is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. In this steamy climate there’s a living to be made, a living that can end swiftly by disease—or by dagger. For Captain Charles Hunter, gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking, and the law of the land rests with those ruthless enough to make it.

This book has taken me awhile to read for many reasons:

  • my school – work
  • I have a 3 year old with energy for days
  • I was in the way of myself – lazy, putting of reading it.

Finally, I finished it and I’m pleasantly surprised! Pirate Latitudes was hard for me to start reading, it’s not my go to genre. I was given the book from a friend who thought I’d enjoy it. I was hesitant at first but once I started reading more I started to enjoy it. It’s a drama from start to finish.

Once Captain Hunter sets sail on his ship the Cassandra the book takes off and gives nothing but on your the edge of your seat drama and surprises I didn’t see coming! Pirates Latitudes had warships, a kraken (what??) and open waters. A raid to take over a ship, will it be successful? Or too daring?

Characters to Actors

There were many characters in this book and I wasn’t able to nail down the main characters until the very end. I’ll start with the most important character in the book, Captain Hunter.

Captain Charles Hunter

When I picture Captain Hunter I image a strong willed, independent, manly man. A man who can hold his own in any situation and come out the victor every time. Now thinking of an actor who can pull of these qualities and at the right age can be difficult. I searched and thought and came up with Henry Cavill. Henry is a strong solid man. He was good in the Superman movies and I believe he has depth in his acting and could become Hunter and give us an amazing performance.

Sanson – Hunters’ right had man

Sanson is a tough French man, notorious for being the most ruthless killer in the Caribbean. He’s hard a rugged. He has the skill of the crossbow, he’s untrustworthy and Hunter can tell from a mile away. For this suspicious character, i went with Ralph Fiennes. Ralph has played many of bad guys in movies, such as Harry in In Bruges, Francis Dolarhyde in Red Dragon and we can’t forget Lord Voldmort in the Harry Potter movies.

Lazue a woman raised as a man is an excellent marksman with amazing vision. Helping the El Trinidad find their way through tough waters, Lazue is an asset Hunter can’t afford to lose. For this character I went with Elizabeth Caplan. I’ve seen her in many things such as Master of Sex and Mean Girls. I believe with the right clothing and makeup and her acting skills she could nail the part of Lazue.

 Bassa aka The Moor

A huge giant of a man and mute, who had his tongue cut off, sadly his wife was murdered he traveled to Port Royal to make a living. He’s intimidating and has strength and power than most men. I decided to go with Djimon Hounsou. I think he’d do a great job playing The Moor. Djimon has a quiet look about him. I believe he could capture The Moors qualities.

Don Diego aka Black Eye aka The Jew

Don Diego runs a jewelry shop in Port Royal. A very smart man. He’s Hunters bombing expert. Helping create instruments of destruction that no other man could imagine. I envision this character as a smaller not very strong individual like the rest of the group. I decided to go with <Daniel Brühl. I personally have never seen him in a movie and to be honest I went with someone who looked the part.

Mr. Enders is a barber-surgeon. At sea, he’s a helmsman, a “sea artist.” Able to steer any ship perfectly. I chose Garrett Hedlund; as Enders.

Captain Cazalla

A villain in this book, is a Spaniard who commands the fortress of Matanceros and a warship. He’s a violent man and takes anything he wishes. He has history with Don Diego as well as Captain Hunter. For this villain I chose, Javier Bardem. I believe he is the definition of a villain. He could play any part without problem.
